My Chakras are Blocked - How To Unblock Them?
When people say that their "chakras are blocked", they usually mean that they can’t feel their chakras. Several students have come to us saying their chakras are blocked and want to know how to unblock them.
Before we can answer this question, there are several things they need to know.
- The chakras are six potent psychic energy centers within the spinal cord that control and direct all body, mind, and individual consciousness activity.
- However, in most people, the chakras are dormant or in a potential state. They have not been activated. In the same way that a flame is potential in a match, the chakras are potential in the spine.
- Before they can be ignited, they need to be activated. This is done via specific yoga-tantra meditations, such as Ajapa Japa. This is often combined with powerful third eye chakra activation meditations.
- Certain preparatory practices and lifestyle modifications are necessary to activate the chakras and create the conditions for success.
Purification
Activating the chakras initiates a process of purification.
During this process, any blockages to the chakra or its connecting channels must be dealt with. Yoga-tantra techniques are designed to remove blockages and restore the health of each chakra and optimal alignment between them.
The chakras can be sleeping, dreaming, or awake
Each chakra has specific physical, mental, and spiritual attributes, powers, abilities, and functions.
The attributes, powers, and abilities in each chakra are said to be either:
- asleep and not available to you,
- in a dreaming state and partially available to you, or
- awake and fully available for you to access.
Therefore, it is said that your chakras are either asleep, in a dreaming state, or awake, and of course, these states are part of a spectrum moving between deeply asleep to fully awake.
- Sleeping chakras are blocked.
- Dreaming chakras are starting to wake up but are hazy.
- Chakras that are awake have been fully developed and optimized and can reveal their powers and abilities to our awareness.
Your chakras are dormant or in a potential state
Many people believe the chakras in the spine are physical structures that can easily be accessed and controlled. Although the chakras lie within the spine, they lie within a subtle spinal passage composed of luminous psychic energy called sushumna.
Sushumna is a psychic passage at the center of the spinal cord and conducts consciousness to all the chakras from the highest chakra, sahasrara.
Sushumna is only awakened from its usually dormant state by specific concentration meditation practices. This is why the chakras cannot be seen, touched, or explained in terms of anatomy and physiology within a modern scientific and medical context.
According to yoga-tantra, a chakra only comes into conscious awareness from its dormant potential in the unconscious via intense concentration-based meditative practice (sādhana). All the components of a chakra are present in the body and mind. However, these components must be purified, strengthened, and aligned around a central conscious core.
A rare few people are born with these elements so aligned that their chakras are active at birth. Yogis tell us that this is usually due to the accumulation of good karma in past births, probably from some form of spiritual practice.
For most of us, the components that make up a chakra are out of alignment or contain blemishes that block activation unless a karmic remedy is applied. In the same way that a flame is only potential in a match and, in fact, does not yet exist until the match is struck, so too, the chakras lie potential in all of us, just waiting for the right conditions, which includes enough consciousness, energy, and friction to bring them into existence. Only then can we access their dormant powers and abilities.
When activated, the chakras order, integrate, coordinate, and control all the elements that make up our human existence and create our body, personality, thoughts, emotions, desires, and feelings.
However, suppose the chakras are not functioning efficiently, or are weak, or their connecting channels are blocked. In that case, we can suffer from physical and psychological distress and feel powerless and without meaning and direction in life.
What happens if your chakras are blocked?
There are several ways that the chakras can feel blocked:
Energy distribution blockage
Problems on the path occur when the chakras lack energy, usually because the distributing channels, the nadis, are blocked or out of alignment.
Suppose the chakras and their connecting pathways are blocked. In that case, the life force, prana shakti, and mental energy, chitta shakti, cannot move between the chakras. Then, the chakra cannot function optimally.
Also, kundalini, the evolutionary energy attempting to lift and guide you to higher consciousness, is blocked. Kundalinī is a mighty force, much more powerful than your body and mind. The energy of kundalinī is like a giant river looking for the best way to move back to the ocean, its source.
When the distributing channels are not working, energy will flow to wherever there is the least resistance or into a weak spot and over-charge certain areas. You will experience psychic stagnation, which is felt as a loss of meaning and purpose and disconnection from oneself.
Conflict between several chakras
Another reason the chakras are blocked or dysfunctional is if two chakras conflict.
For example, there can be a conflict between the heart chakra, anāhata, which rules compassion, and the navel chakra, manipura, which governs power.
If you are stuck in the desire for power, you might repress your compassion so that energy doesn’t flow to the heart chakra, which is prevented from expressing. Or you may have a wound in the heart chakra, perhaps from early childhood experiences, which causes you to repress emotions and feelings.
Lack of connection or conflict between chakras blocks your progress, causing inner distress, dysfunction, and disease.
Insufficient energy
The other point is that, in most people, the chakras operate at a very low voltage, just enough to power day-to-day consciousness. Most of our energy goes into the demands and routines of life. It is not that the chakras are blocked. Therefore, the chakras are dormant or only in potential form. They have not yet come into existence.
Only when we meditate on the chakras can we send consciousness and energy to the chakra area and charge them up.
Too much energy
The other side of the coin is when one chakra is overcharged and stuck in overdrive. When this occurs, other chakras may not have enough energy to function optimally.
This overcharged chakra will drive your thoughts, emotions, desires, and feelings. This applies to the lower chakras, muladhara and swadhisthana chakras, which govern sexual drive; the navel chakra, manipura, which governs power; and the third eye chakra, ajna, causing overthinking.
Remember, the more energy you have available, the more you can power the system. However, too much energy will initially cause discomfort and imbalance if you have not sufficiently purified your body, nervous system, mind, and emotions. The power will energize any cracks in your body, mind, and psyche. Energy is neutral and flows to the place of least resistance. It does not discriminate. It will energize your strengths and weaknesses, so you must be wise in how much energy you create and distribute.
Chakra purification
Each chakra contains both good and bad karmas, those that are pleasant and those that are painful. Our past karmas must be purified before we can access each chakra's hidden powers and abilities. This is especially true for the lower chakras, muladhara, and swadhisthana, which are linked to our animal instincts, drives, and impulses.
The purification process can be challenging to manage if your mind is not strong enough to witness and objectify the purification processs, which requires thorough preparation and, even then, can be challenging. In fact, the awakening of a chakra can lead to an explosion of karmas that require prior training to manage. By starting your journey at ajna, you develop the capacity to reason and the understanding, mental strength, and stamina, as well as the ethics, to better manage the purification and activation of the lower chakras.
Consistent versus sporadic practice
You must practice consistently and diligently, even if the practice is only 10 minutes a day.
Regular meditation according to your circumstances and ability will support you in generating the prāna and resilience required to handle what is arising and the momentum to face and manage your karma as quickly as possible. You will make rapid progress, provided that you paradoxically don’t rush. The key is to remain grounded and self-aware and develop a manageable practice program that fits your present life circumstances and abilities.
Consistency and a systematic approach unblock and realign the chakras.
So, instead of conflicting, your chakras will tend to cooperate, and any necessary healing can begin. The more self-aware you are, the more you can direct this energy appropriately and work with your karma effectively. It is essential to be patient and not rush ahead.
How to Unblock Your Chakras Through Meditation
If you find that your chakras are blocked, the path to unblocking them lies in the power of focused meditation.
Meditation works to purify and energise the subtle energy pathways, ensuring that prana shakti flows harmoniously through the nadis and between each chakra. This alignment allows for optimal function and the activation of their latent abilities.
Unblocking blocked chakras requires a blend of techniques that centre around concentration and mindful practice. By dedicating yourself to regular meditation, especially those practices tailored to awaken the chakras—like Ajapa Japa and third eye meditation—you cultivate awareness and guide energy intentionally through the subtle spinal pathway, sushumna. This practice helps remove obstacles and energises each chakra, empowering them to work in harmony.
Consistent practice fosters resilience and stabilises energy flow, avoiding the extremes of energy depletion or overdrive in any single chakra. This balance is key to preventing psychic stagnation and maintaining mental, emotional, and physical health. When meditation becomes a habitual part of your life, it acts as a tool for not just maintaining balance but also nurturing a deeper connection to your inner self. Over time, meditation can transform dormant potential into awakened energy centres that fully express their powers, giving you a sense of well-being and purpose.
So, if you feel your chakras are blocked, remember that unblocking them is a journey that requires patience, perseverance, and conscious practice. With time, you’ll discover that meditation isn’t just a practice; it’s a pathway to a life aligned with vitality, clarity, and balance.
