eMag ~ Self Awareness, Yoga Psychology, and Mental Well-being
As many of our students know, we regard self-awareness as the most essential element for success in yoga and meditation practice.
Self-awareness grows when we turn our attention inward, intending to understand who we are and our various strengths and weaknesses.
This process of self-reflection enables us to become aware of our strengths, which is especially important if we feel disconnected from them because we will have low self-esteem. We need our strengths to face our weaknesses. Otherwise, we’ll continue to avoid them, and they will continue to undermine our ability to have a good life.
At Big Shakti, we believe that the ultimate goal of all yoga practices, be it postures, breathing, or meditation, is the uplifting and expansion of consciousness. We are excited to share this journey with you through our monthly newsletter, articles, and podcasts. We hope these resources will help you expand your sense of self and inspire you to live a more fulfilling life.

Self-awareness, Self-regulation, and Self-mastery
The one thing that is essential and core to all of our teachings is the concept of self-awareness. Self-awareness, the unchanging principle in life, is the central concept in all of yoga, yoga tantra, and meditative practice. The core aim of all wisdom traditions is self-knowledge. Know thyself, and unto yourself be true, is the ancient dictum that has been passed down through the ages.
In this podcast episode, we discuss self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-mastery.

Reflection
Jung equates the highest Self with the God within us. He writes:
"The self is not only the center but also the whole circumference, which embraces both conscious and unconscious; it is the center of this totality, just as the ego is the center of consciousness. I call this unknowable the 'self'... The self... might equally be called the 'God within us." [“Introduction,” CW 12, par. 44.]
Here are 5 reflection points to consider on this as you move through the month.
- Exploring the Self: How do I perceive my highest Self? In what ways can I recognise and connect with the 'God within me'?
- Beyond the Ego: Consider the distinction between the ego and the Self. How often do I identify with my ego rather than my deeper, more expansive Self?
- Integration of Conscious and Unconscious: Reflect on the idea that the Self encompasses both conscious and unconscious aspects of my being. How can I become more aware of my unconscious mind? What steps can I take to integrate the conscious and unconscious parts of myself? How might this integration affect my overall sense of self?
- Self as Whole Circumference: Reflect on the Self as not just the centre but the entire circumference of my being. What does embracing the totality of my being mean to me? How can I work towards accepting and integrating all aspects of who I am?
- Journey Towards Self-Discovery: What personal practices or experiences have brought me closer to understanding my true Self? How can I continue this journey of self-discovery?
