Secrets of the Mind eBook
Dr Claudia Welch
A study into the organization and function of the mind.
This deep study of the classical texts of Ayurveda and Tantra weaves together the components of an ancient theory of mind, and has profound relevance for all students of Ayurveda, Yoga Psychology and Tantra.
Because of its potential importance to Ayurvedic and Yoga Therapy practitioners and to patients, I undertook this study to explore how the mind is described in Ayurvedic and Yoga-Tantra texts. In particular I wanted to find more detail about the concept known as ‘the channels that carry the mind’ - the ‘Manovahasrotas’.
The main points I researched are:
- How do the classical Ayurvedic texts describe the manovahasrotas?
- What information is missing?
- Why would it not be included if it is of potentially great importance?
- Are missing links described in some other authoritative text?
- If so, what are the implications of such knowledge and how might we benefit from it?
In this study I have made connections between Ayurveda, Yoga and Tantra that have not to my knowledge, been made before. I have attempted to put forward a clear explanation of what the ten vessels are that classical Ayurvedic texts refer to, but do not explain. I did this in order to help us understand:
- How the mind is organized.
- How the mind functions in relationship with other physiological systems.
- How the senses affect the mind.
- How the mind and body affect each other.
- The effects of pranayama on the mind.
I trust that this comparison of concepts from different traditions will help students and professionals to gain a clearer understanding of the workings of the mind and provide valuable resource material for further study.
